Messi surpasses Hugo Sánchez as the second all-time scorer in La Liga and Di Stéfano as the top all-time scorer in Clásicos

Leo Messi continues to make history. This Sunday, in the match against Madrid, the Argentinian became the second highest goalscorer in the history of La Liga as he smashed Hugo Sánchez’s record, and surpassed Alfredo Di Stéfano as the player with the most goals in Clásicos. Messi has scored 21 times in Clásicos, while the former Madrid player scored 18.

With 236 goals in La Liga, Messi is now second in the all-time goalscorer table of La Liga, up until this evening Hugo Sánchez occupied that position with 234 goals. Therefore, the only player to score more goals in the competition is Telmo Zarra, who has an advantage of 16 goals over the Argentinian. Last week, Messi blew past the marks set by Raúl (228) and Di Stéfano (227).

Most of his goals were scored on Casillas

Iker Casillas is the keeper to concede the most goals to Messi in Clásicos. In fact, of Messi’s 21 goals, his first 17 were against the legendary keeper. Diego López conceded to Messi in last year’s 2-1 victory over Barça, and then again three times this evening.

The Cup, the final challenge

Messi leaves behind Di Stéfano (18), but he also increases his advantage over Raúl (15), César (14), Gento (14), Puskas (14) and Santillana (12). Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 13 goals in Clásicos.

If we break down his goals by competition, it would look like this: 14 in La Liga, 5 in the Spanish Super Cup, 2 in the Champions League. The  Copa del Rey is the only competition in which Messi hasn’t scored against Madrid.
